Our Mission
"To restore community vibrancy through economic growth, historic preservation, local partnerships, and community-building cooperatives."
Our non-profit is grounded in the power of organization and collaboration as the cornerstone of our approach. Our local efforts in the downtown district provide incentives and resources to business owners which preserve historic character, stimulate economic vitality, and foster community engagement. This approach reassures our partners and community members of the effectiveness of our strategies.
Main Street districts across the country have been revitalizing local economies for over thirty years by focusing energy, resources, and people-power on improving older and historic commercial districts. An Affiliated Main Street Designation as of June 2020, Main Street Atmore is dedicated to the Main Street America & Alabama four-point proven approach in organization, promotion, design, and economic vitality. In 2023, our program met performance standards to become an Accredited Main Street Program. This three-year accomplishment was quite a fete as most affiliated programs operate for five to seven years before earning an accredited status. Our driven commitment gives us hope for the future and inspires our partners and community members to join us in our mission.
Downtown Atmore is a hidden gem that resonates with the rhythm of Southern charm and hospitality. A town steeped in rich traditions and history, it serves as a testament to the resilience and spirit of its people.

The Welcoming Atmosphere and Sense of Community
Downtown Atmore's atmosphere can be best described as inviting, friendly, and bursting with excitement. The district prides itself on the philosophy of "working together for success," and this collaborative spirit is evident in every aspect of the community. Local businesses frequently refer customers to one another, share each other's promotions on social media, and unite as a community to support the Main Street Atmore initiatives that breathe life into their beloved district.
Notable Local Businesses and Contributors
One of the gems of downtown is "The Gather," a premier restaurant that was awarded the title of Alabama's Best Beef in 2020. While it's impossible to single out just one standout business, it's worth mentioning "Philanthropic Seed," aptly nicknamed "The little shop that gives back." This store donates a portion of its earnings to support the local community, embodying the spirit of giving that defines Atmore.
The district also boasts the support of two local banks, First National Bank & Trust and United Bank, which are not only major donors to the Main Street program but also supporters of the entire community. Green spaces are scattered throughout the district, including a captivating pollinator garden located at the American Legion. Additionally, beautifully painted murals adorn the district's buildings, adding a touch of artistic flair to the surroundings. The newly renovated Strand Theatre's illuminated sign lights up the night, infusing the district with energy and vitality.
Local Traditions, Festivals, and Events
Atmore's rich history is celebrated with the annual "Williams Station Day," a festival held by the Chamber of Commerce in late October. This event features entertainment, a car show, arts and crafts, heritage displays, local vendors, delicious food, train rides, and more. Throughout the year, family-oriented events like "Trick-or-Treat on the Street," "Music on Main," "Jingle Bell Walk & Lighting of Christmas Tree," "Ribs on Ridgley," and the "Twilight Christmas Parade" create a sense of excitement and community spirit, drawing residents and visitors alike downtown.
Another significant event is the Annual Thanksgiving Pow Wow held by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. This two-day homecoming celebration showcases the tribe's rich cultural heritage, and it's open to all tribes and local citizens. While the event occurs on the Poarch Creek Reservation, its importance to the town's residents cannot be overstated, with 51 years of tradition behind it.

Downtown Atmore offers a variety of recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors. On the corner of South Main and Church Street, the American Legion's Butterfly Garden is a true delight. Additionally, it includes a memorial to soldiers and a striking flag mural painted by local artist Wes Hardin.
The north side houses Box Car Willie Park, a green space equipped with benches, lighting, a covered area, and even an entertainment venue inside a train boxcar. This versatile space has hosted bands, plays, church revivals, and more.
